Choosing the right size paddle
choosing the length
When picking a paddle or creating the dimensions for a custom Greenland paddle there are three main things to consider. First is the overall length of your paddle. Almost all paddles range from 80 to 92 inches long. The length of your paddle will influence the cadence of your stroke. Shorter paddles being quicker paced and longer paddles being slower paced. In terms of body sizes if you are on the shorter end you may look for paddles in the small to medium lengths. for people on the taller side you may look for paddles in the longer to medium lengths. Other sources suggest measuring your hand stretched high from the ground with a slight bend in the elbow.
choosing the loom size
Second the Loom Length. The size of the loom is a bit more important in ensuring a good paddle fit. the loom is the length of paddle in which your hands rest on it. this length is comparable to your shoulder width which can be measured by comfortably laying your hands in font of you and measuring the distance between them. typical loom lenghts will range from 18 to 23 inches.
choosing the blade width
Third the blade width. The blade width is determined by the making a C shape with your hands and measuring the distance between your thumb and other fingers. the idea here is that you will be able to grasp the end of your paddle blade which is done at times doing different Greenland strokes. Most blades width will only vary a half inch from 3 to 3.5 inches. often you can size up because you can still grasp the blade lower down as the blade tapers to still extend your leverage.
